Buon Fresco
Today there is a fresco revival underway with an attempt to recapture an almost lost form of art. A strict adherence to the Buon Fresco (true fresco) tradition is in the hands of a select few. From earliest cave drawings and the tombs of Egypt to the glorious frescoes of the Italian Renaissance, man has adorned his walls with paintings depicting scenes of daily life. These depictions evolved into spiritual and intellectual quests. With the birth of Christianity, frescoes related Biblical stories on church altars and walls. From these the viewer drew guidance as well as a knowledge of scripture within an atmosphere of reverence. This experience served to strengthen faith. Still in existence are remnants of ancient frescoes as well as the great true frescoes of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries of Giotto and Masaccio and the frescoes of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Today a few select artists have mastered the ancient art of true fresco and can consider themselves purists in their resolve and dedication to a fine art that is as much an ideal as a process.
Gerald Steinmeyer is one of these artists. product photography
